What is PlayBack Theatre?
Someone in the audience tells a moment or story from their life, chooses the actors to play the different roles, and then all those present watch the enactment, as the story “comes to life” with artistic shape and nuance. In the re-creation of stories actors often use metaphor, narration, chorus, genre, movement and song. It is heartfelt and passionate for both audience and the company!
One of the co-founders Jonathon Fox says:
“It’s fun, it’s juicy, and it’s joyful. It asks a lot from us—creativity, integrity, a willingness to truly work together. We do it to use our bodies. We do it to tell our stories. And there’s something more—we do it to make it possible for others to tell their story and to make the world a more peaceful place.”

We will be playing at the Blue Doors on High St Willunga on Jan 22 during Tour Down Under. We’d love to see you there! The theme will be Sustainability.
Thanks to everyone for their support of Willunga Playback this year.
The final performance of the year was with the Home and Community Care services to Aboriginal communities at their annual professional development day at Victor Harbour. Training and performing for entertainment and education came together with a session on speaking in public. The feedback and opportunities reminded us all of the value of improv as a method of transferring skills and knowledge.
We were hired by Volunteering SA & NT Inc to provide this service and look forward to working with VSA & NT in the year ahead.
We are busy preparing for auditions in February - so if you are interested in trying out to join the company please contact us and we will send you an audition information pack.
Today we heard stories from wonderful women share their journeys to leadership. The course sponsored by BUPA.
Bupa Australia’s vision of being Australia’s favourite healthcare company is centred around its purpose of helping people live longer, healthier, happier lives. We enjoyed hearing the laughter, joy and reflection that these women brought to the performance today - great ambassadors for their business.
Some of the key words we heard:
passionate responsiblity honesty fun pressure courage exhausted
We listened and played stories from childhood, motherhood, being over confident, and then saved in biblical proportions and being inspired and supported at home, work and by girlfriends!
Wisdom treasures of the day included:
“remember 95% of people want you to succeed”
” the leader I fell in love with as a 6 year old has helped me with my core values as as leader now”
” I didn’t think I could do it and now I can!”
Playback Willunga’s performance was the conclusion to their course - and we were delighted to be a part of their program. The company today was players Jane, Don and Billie Joe, musican Tony, Lynn did the filming and Moira the conducting.
This year the Sydney companies Out of the Box and Sydney Playback hosted the national conference at Collaroy in the northern suburbs (starting on the evening of Sept 8 -12). It was a wonderful, enriching exchange of ideas, talents, forms, songs and of course stories! The network of companies have established a facebook to share our connections and you can see some of the sharing here.
Over the four days the following companies showcased their work as companies or with combinations of players from other companies:
Out of the Box (Sydney)
Sydney Playback
Melbourne Playback
Western Edge Playback (Melbourne)
Blue Moutains Playback (NSW)
Canberra Playback
Hobart Playback
Cape Byron Playback
Brisbane Playback
Perth Playback
Willunga Playback (South Australia - that’s us!)
as well as some friends of Playback and former players, conductors and musicans.
New Zealand playbackers hinted that they might take up the challenge and try for NZ to host the next opportunity and make it a truly ANZ event. Let’s Watch!
Come and find the Willunga Playback Company in Gouger St on Friday Sept 17th. Bring your story to life!
The Willunga Playback Company are getting ready for this exciting event where we will launching the smallest theatre in the world.
A converted camper trailer bedecked in sumptous velvet draw curtains will tempt passers-by to step in for an intimate taste of Playback Theatre. We will be asking our audience of six people per performance to talk about their experiences of PARK(ing) Day, city and park life.
The actor and musicans will then playback the essence of those experiences through improvisation and music. Each performance will last no more than thirty minutes. What an exciting way to listen in to the public and what they think!
Friday Sept 17th somewhere near the market - Exact location will be advised in due course.
Let’s watch!
Artistic Director and graduate of Adelaide College of the Arts Billie Joe Van Dam provided an evening teaching new skills for the improv players. A wonderful evening where all players were challenged to stretch and ‘climb the ladder’ to build skills in story telling.
The company are working towards more performance opportunities soon … we are open for business and are looking for places to share your stories.
